Henry Clay first introduced the Mint Julep to the world at the hotel bar. The first delegation from newly opened Japan stayed at the hotel, with three Samurai, for meetings with President James Buchanan. Abraham Lincoln stayed there as well for ten days before his inauguration. As did Ulysses S. Grant when Lincoln summoned him to take command of the Union’s armies. The Battle Hymn of the Republic was written there. The term lobbyist comes from Grant bothered by self-promoters in the hotel’s extravagant lobby. In the lobby, Martin Luther King wrote the “I Have a Dream” speech. The movie “The Minority Report” was filmed there in part. And recent visitors include the Dalai Lama and Indian Prime Minister Modi.
For three days this October, this beautiful and historic hotel, “the Residence of the Presidents,” will be the venue for the Fortnightly Top Innovators 2023 conference. Only a few hundred feet from the White House, the conference will be hosted in the Willard’s Grand Ballroom and adjacent meeting spaces, the first evening reception in the ornate Crystal Room, and the second evening reception in the beautiful courtyard.
